The Abwassertechnische Vereinigung (ATV), the predecessor organization of today's DWA , organized the congress. 147 exhibitors from nine countries and 10,200 visitors from 40 nations took part in an area of 18,000 square meters. The share of international exhibitors is 48 percent.

Ten years later, in addition to the wastewater sector, water supply was also discussed. Thermal and biological waste recycling has also been considered since 2000.
In 2010, Entsorga, the international trade fair for waste management, water management and environmental technology, which had been taking place in Cologne until then, was merged with IFAT.
