IG Swiss Internet Radio

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The IG Schweizer Internetradio (ISI) is the user association of Swiss webcasters and an independent association promoting cultural and media diversity in Switzerland and Liechtenstein .

The initiator Carl Flisch had the idea to unite all Swiss internet radio stations in an independent organization in order to found a stream sharing pool together with the copyright associations IFPI Switzerland and SUISA . This should make the existing, for many private Internet radio stations unaffordable copyright fees based on the model of the DIRV (German Internet Radio Association) more transparent.

On November 3, 2004, the interest group started its work with the first members:

It was founded on March 31, 2005 in Zurich . The association consists of several active Swiss Internet radio stations and on August 6, 2005 received support from Init Seven AG, a Swiss Internet service provider , and the student association SOSeth at ETH Zurich .

The following active members are now there (as of December 2012):

  • Radio lightning
  • Bigbeat.ch
  • BlastFM.ch
  • Blue World Radio
  • Dance Nation 1
  • EHC Arosa radio

While the ISI is recognized by the state-licensed collecting societies SUISA and Swissperform as a user association of Swiss webcasters and takes part in collective bargaining meetings in connection with the new copyright law , it is currently in an open conflict with the IFPI. Since 2005 the ISI has tried in vain to negotiate a new tariff with the IFPI to compensate for the transfer rights to its members. Although the ISI looked back on positive discussions with the IFPI members in February 2007, no agreement could yet be reached with the management of IFPI Switzerland. The ISI and its members see themselves as promoters in the service of the music industry. By creating niche stations, the artists rarely played on conventional radio are being courted. According to their own understanding, it can only be in the interests of the members of the IFPI in the long term if more are added to the traditional distribution channels and webcasting develops into a lucrative business model in which they can participate.

After four years of silence with SUISA, the ISI was unexpectedly invited to the GT S collective bargaining as the main user association on February 17, 2009. The Common Tariff S (GT S) regulates the copyright compensation for broadcasters in Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein that transmit radio and / or television programs directly on the Internet or feed them into cable networks. On June 15, 2009, the IG Schweizer Internetradio confirmed SUISA's acceptance of the newly negotiated tariff for webcasters, which was based on the German GVL contract. After a thorough examination by the Federal Arbitration Commission for the Exploitation of Copyrights and Related Rights (ESchK), the new contract came into force on November 4, 2010.

After several years of negotiations with the advertising industry, the association also reached an agreement with Mediabox GmbH on August 3, 2010. Through radio advertising new revenue sources for the payment of copyright fees and / or financing of their operating costs opened up for webcasters. The first test spots were broadcast in December 2010 with Bose Corporation , Swisscom and DaKine .
