INS Kattabomman is an establishment of the Fixed Marine Service of the Indian Navy . The station was established in 1990 in Vijayanarayanam, Tirunelveli in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu . Equipped with a long-wave transmitter and an ELF transmitter, the radio station is also used for communication with the Indian submarine flotilla.

The station is named after the Tamil independence fighter Kattaboman.

history

The Indian Navy's Kattaboman was commissioned in 1990. From 1987 to 1989 the station was built on October 20, 1990 and put into operation. A shield antenna is used as the transmitting antenna , which is supported by a 301-meter-high central mast, six 276.4-meter-high masts standing on a circle with a radius of 735 meters around the central mast, and six further masts, each 227.4-meter-high stand on a circle with an even larger radius of 1235 meters. The transmitter works on the frequency 18.2  kHz .

ELF transmitter

Since March 2012 a transmitter for ELF has been built near this facility. No technical details are known. Two transmission masts, each 471 meters high, which are the tallest structures in India, were erected at 8.378511 N 77.743973 O and 8.375066 N 77.755839 O. The station was built and equipped by M / s Larsen & Turbo Divisions in Chennai and Bangalore . It is not known to what extent these masts are connected to the ELF transmitter. However, they can only be used for broadcasts in the VLF area.
