INTEGRA - German Network for Overcoming Female Genital Mutilation is an amalgamation of organizations that are active in development cooperation. The aim is to “combat” female genital mutilation (FGM). The network is based in Frankfurt am Main .

Origin and Patronage

The network was created in 2000 on the initiative of the German Society for Technical Cooperation , since 2005 under the name INTEGRA. The patrons of the alliance were the former Federal Presidents Joachim Gauck , Horst Köhler and Christian Wulff .

Objective and work areas

By joining forces in a network, the individual organizations say they want to use synergy effects in order to combat the practice of genital mutilation more efficiently. The work in the alliance includes, among other things, the exchange of different approaches to combating FGM as well as the exchange of practical experience and exemplary activities (“good practices”). The priorities of the work in the area of FGM "combating" include among others:

  • Raising awareness and education about the consequences of FGM

  • Support of local initiatives and strengthening of private and state organizations that are committed against FGM
  • Lobbying at home and abroad to overcome FGM

After a large part of the INTEGRA member organizations, e.g. B. UNICEF , Plan International , GTZ and Terre des Femmes in autumn 2007 with a petition and a. by Waris Dirie of the Inter-African Committee on Traditional Practices (IAC) had been asked to comply with the Bamako Declaration, the network in 2008 drew up a proposal for joint use of the terminology "genital mutilation" or "circumcision".
