The ITAS group ( Istituto Trentino Alto-Adige per Assicurazioni ) is the oldest Italian mutual insurance association and one of the ten largest insurance companies in Italy. The insurance association was founded in Innsbruck in 1821 in what was then the county of Tyrol ( Austria-Hungary ). After the First World War, the southern part of Tyrol with the name Trentino-Alto Adige was assigned to the Kingdom of Italy, in which ITAS Versicherung is the market leader today. The institute was then divided into an Austrian and an Italian branch; the Italian seat was moved to Trento . The northern part was continued as a Tyrolean insurance company based in Innsbruck. From 1950, ITAS received approval to operate in the areas of accident, theft and motor vehicle insurance as well as general liability insurance. From 1974 ITAS also entered the life insurance business.

In Italy, ITAS is now represented across the board, with a regional focus on north-west and central Italy. ITAS has more than 800 employees and 905 offices with more than 4600 professional advisers and 200 insurance brokers. In addition, individually tailored products are sold through cooperation with banks. The opening of a large branch in Milan is planned for 2017. ITAS also has a large branch in Genoa. Premium income in 2018 amounted to 1.4 billion euros. ITAS operates in six different companies.

  • Assicuratrice Val Piave SpA, based in Belluno
  • ITAS Patrimonio, which z. B. manages the Group's real estate assets.

ITAS Holding was founded in 2000 in order to show the group new strategic solutions for its growth and expansion strategy. ITAS Versicherungen AG goes back to the takeover of the Serenissima insurance company in 1991, which specialized in the transport sector. ITAS Leben originally emerged from the takeover of Edera Vita and was renamed in 1996. In 1999, the Val Piave insurance company based in Belluno was taken over. In 2016 the real estate company ITAS Service Srl was liquidated.

Protection against fire damage during the Austrian monarchy (1820-1917)

Historically, the establishment can be traced back to the fires at the beginning of the 19th century. They often broke out in towns and villages, especially in places where mainly wood was used for construction. In Tyrol there was a growing need among citizens and institutions to protect themselves through insurance, following the example of other countries in the monarchy and other European states. In 1992 ITAS became a shareholder in E + S Rück.

Expansion and internationalization

The ITAS Group has been looking abroad since the early 1990s and has joint ventures and cooperations with Hannover Re and VHV Versicherung from Germany. ITAS also endeavors to insure Italian citizens who work in the Alpine regions close to the border (in Austria and Slovenia).

In 2015, the Italian subsidiaries of the British RSA Insurance Group , Sun Insurance Office Ltd (SIO) and Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance plc (RSAI), were taken over by ITAS. The subsidiaries will continue to operate under the ITAS2U brand. As a result, the company is now also working in areas of expertise such as engineering and goods transport, making it the eighth largest property insurer in Italy.

Foundation, endowment

The organization is also involved in charitable causes. The ITASolidale project particularly supports social projects that are intended to benefit the population and the general public. ITASolidale thus corresponds to the ITAS value system in which solidarity and reciprocity play a central role.
