iWeb is an Apple program for easily creating websites . iWeb was part of the software package iLife Version '06 to Version '11. However, the development has since stopped.

iWeb is aimed primarily at users who want to quickly achieve good results when creating websites without knowledge of HTML. iWeb is very suitable for beginners.

iWeb does not require a server-side script language or databases. For the full functionality, the website must be published on MobileMe.

iWeb is a WYSIWYG editor. For this, iWeb uses ready-made templates (themes), which are mainly based on graphic elements and image files. These templates can be used and exchanged quickly and easily. Modifying the templates or creating individual templates is not possible with on-board resources. The created pages can be customized very easily. By copying (duplicates) the individualized pages, they can be used like templates.

Source code editing is missing. A partial addition to the source code is possible using the HTML snippet function. On the other hand, skillful use of the program's options allows extensive graphic freedom.

Fixed layout HTML

The websites are created in a fixed layout. The content is displayed in a static area that is exactly 700px wide by default and is centered in the browser window ( viewport ). All components used (text fields, shapes and graphics) are created with fixed sizes and positions on the website. The technology used ensures a uniform display on all Internet browsers . If a scaling function is used in the browser, this affects the entire content. All components are scaled evenly and the optical image - the visual impression - is retained.

The procedure for this is comparable to the Fixed Layout EPUB used today in the e-book sector .

Even if iWeb does not use Resposive web design , the result can achieve good to very good results on mobile devices , tablets and desktop systems.

Functions

The following editing functions are available:

However, some functions are only available for websites under a MobileMe account:

  • Full text search in blogs and podcasts
  • Comments in blogs
  • MobileMe Gallery widget

which can be integrated into websites via iWeb, such as B. a visitor counter or comments in blogs are only executable.

With iWeb websites can be opened directly

  • MobileMe or
  • transferred to a web server via integrated FTP transfer. When the data is published, either only the changed content is transmitted or the entire website.

An export to a local folder is also possible.

Program development

iWeb was introduced in January 2006 and is part of the iLife '06 software package from Apple.

New widgets were added in iWeb '08, such as Google Maps, Google AdSense, Videos and HTML Building Block. The photo album was added as a function. New topics were also provided.

New widgets were added in iWeb '09 such as iSight Video (now FaceTime Video), iSight Photo (now FaceTime Photo), Countdown, YouTube Video and RSS Feeds. With the newly integrated FTP publishing, any host server can now be used to publish the website.

IWeb was last delivered with iLife '11. With the introduction of the Mac App Store, iWeb was finally discontinued and the MobileMe service was also closed on July 1, 2012.

Some of the functions of iWeb can be found in Apple's iBooks Author software .

iWeb is a 32-bit application and can be used with the operating system versions from Mac OS X Tiger 10.4 up to macOS Mojave 10.14. From macOS Catalina 10.15, which only supports 64-bit applications, iWeb can no longer be used.
