Iain Hamilton (composer)

Iain Hamilton (born June 6, 1922 in Glasgow ; † July 21, 2000 ) was a Scottish composer and music teacher.

Life

Hamilton attended Mill Hill School in London and completed an engineering degree. At the age of 25 he won a degree at the Royal Academy of Music , where he studied piano with Harold Craxton and Guy Jonson and composition with William Alwyn until 1950 .

In 1950 he won the Dove Prize of the Royal Academy and in the following year the Prize of the Royal Philharmonic Society for his clarinet concerto, the Prize of the Koussevitzky Foundation for his Second Symphony and the Edwin Evans Prize . From 1951 to 1960 he taught at Morley College in London, and from 1952 to 1960 also at the University of London .

Hamilton lived in the USA from 1961 to 1981. Here he held the Mary Duke Biddle Professorship at Duke University in Durham until 1978 . In 1962 he was composer in residence at the Berkshire Music Center in Tanglewood. The University of Glasgow awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1970. In 1961 his music was used for the short film Seawards the Great Ships . This remained his only activity in the film sector.

After returning from the USA, Hamilton lived in London until his death.
