Ian Alexander McDonald

Ian Alexander McDonalds (born 1922 in Perth ; died 1990 ) was an Australian gynecologist and obstetrician .

The McDonald's cervical cerclage was named after him. In 1957 he developed the cerclage to avoid premature births in the case of cervical insufficiency, in which a kind of purse-string suture is placed around the cervix and tied at the front. It's a rather simple process. Since the suture is not placed in the immediate vicinity of the internal cervix due to the vaginal anatomy , it is at least theoretically less effective than other published methods. In practice, only a few studies show significant differences to the Shirodkar method , which he developed in Bombay in 1955. American obstetricians therefore preferred the McDonald's cerclage because of its simpler approach. The procedure has been considered obsolete since the 1980s, as studies have not shown any prolongation of the duration of pregnancy. Only the therapeutic cervical cerclage is applied if the cervix is opened prematurely.
