Services

Shirodkar developed a surgical procedure to treat the weakness of the cervix ( cervical weakness ), which leads to miscarriages in the affected women . During the operation, a constricting suture (cerclage) with a non-absorbable thread is placed around the cervix. This will prevent premature labor. Before the birth, the closure must be opened again or a caesarean section must be performed.

The operation is named after Shirodkar ("Shirodkar-Cerclage").

In 1971 he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan .
