Ian Kemish (* 1961 in England ) is an Australian diplomat .

Life

Kemish was born in England and grew up as a child in Papua New Guinea . In Port Moresby he also attended elementary school. He holds a BA in International Relations and Southeast Asian History from the University of Queensland . He then worked from 1988 for the Australian Foreign Ministry and joined the Australian diplomatic service. For three years he was employed as Counselor or Deputy Ambassador of Australia to Austria in Vienna . In December 2004 he became first assistant secretary to the Australian Prime Minister and the Australian Cabinet. He held this position until 2005. He worked in particular on issues relating to Australian relations with the Asia-Pacific region. From April 2006 he was the Australian ambassador to Germany , Switzerland and Liechtenstein . From February 1, 2010, he was employed as the Australian High Commissioner in Papua New Guinea, based in Port Moresby. He held this position until 2013. This was followed by a job as a consultant for a global raw materials company. He is also an Associate Professor of History at the University of Queensland.

Kemish is married and has two daughters. In addition to English , he also speaks German , Tok Pisin and Indonesian .

Awards

In October 2003, Kemish was appointed a member of the Order of Australia to manage the Australian response to the 2002 Bali attack .
