Ian Pearce (musician)

Ian Philp Pearce (born November 22, 1921 in Hobart ; † November 8, 2012 there ) was an Australian jazz pianist (also trumpet , trombone ).

Pearce, who was active in the Tasmanian music scene , began his career in 1936 when he formed the jazz band The Barrelhouse Four with his brother Cedric and friends Tom Pickering and Rex Green . After completing his military service, he studied at the Melbourne Conservatory before moving to England, where he was involved in the traditional jazz revival of the 1950s and toured internationally with Graeme Bell . On his return to Tasmania, he led the Ian Pearce Sextet and was co-leader of the Pearce-Pickering Jazz Band and the Pearce-Pickering Ragtime Five .

Pearce worked in the field of jazz between 1946 and 2005 with 92 recording sessions. In 1996 he was awarded the Order of Australia for his contributions to jazz . He died two weeks before he would have turned 91.
