Ian Smith (born March 11, 1967 in Shotley Bridge, Country Durham ) is a retired English cricketer . He was a right - handed batsman and right-handed medium bowler who played for Glamorgan and Durham in English national cricket.

Smith made his first-class debut in 1985 while touring Zimbabwe in England. In the County Championship he made his debut at the end of the 1985 season for Glamorgan, who finished twelfth that season. In the 1986 season they had only two wins and ended the season last.

During the 1987 season , Smith was used in Second XI due to a hip injury.

In the 1989 season Smith returned to the first-class team. He had his best game that year with 116 runs against Kent .

For the 1992 season he was committed to first-class cricket promoted Durham, which was accepted as the eighteenth member of the Country Championship.

Durham won only two games in the first year despite Ian Botham and Simon Brown and Australian Dean Jones playing for them. The team was then rebuilt and Smith ended his career. As a result, he emigrated to South Africa .

Smith also competed in five Youth Test Games. The first time this was the case on a tour of the English team against the West Indies cricket team . Another operation took place against Sri Lanka . His best result in a youth test match was 97 runs. He also took part in five Youth One-Day International .
