The Ibarguren Isthmus ( Spanish Istmo Ibarguren ) is a flat isthmus of Laurie Island in the archipelago of the Southern Orkney Islands . It separates the head ends of Uruguay Cove and Scotia Bay and connects the western part of the island, consisting of the Mackenzie and Mossman Peninsula , with the much larger eastern land mass.

Argentine scientists named him after the later writer and historian Carlos Ibarguren (1879-1956), Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Agriculture, to whom the Scottish polar explorer William Speirs Bruce had turned in 1904 to hand over the Omond House . This hut was still operated by the Argentine government as an Orcadas station and is located on the isthmus described here.
