from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ibn Ruschd Prize for Free Thought ( Arabic جائزة ابن رشد للفكر الحرّ, DMG Ǧāʾizat Ibn Rušd lil-fikr al-ḥurr ; English : Ibn Rushd Price for Freedom of Thought ) is awarded for services to democracy and freedom of expression in the Islamic world.

history

The award, which has been advertised since 1999, is endowed with 2,500 euros and is sponsored by the independent Ibn Ruschd Association (مؤسسة ابن رشد للفكر الحرّ, DMG Muʾassasat Ibn Rušd lil-fikr al-ḥurr ; Ibn Rushd Fund for Freedom of Thought ) by Arab citizens mainly living in Germany. The association was founded in 1998, on the 800th anniversary of the death of the philosopher , doctor and judge Ibn Ruschd (1126–1198) - known under the name Averroes in the European Middle Ages . Ibn Ruschd, one of the most famous commentators on Aristotle and critic of the former theologian and later mystic ( Sufi ) al-Ghazali (1058–1111), was chosen as the namesake because he stands for bridging the gap between Islam and the Enlightenment. The association would like to build on this theological and philosophical heyday in the Arab world.
