Malam Ibrahim Shekarau

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau (born November 5, 1955 in Kano ) is a Nigerian politician. He was governor of Kano state from April 2003 to April 2007 . He is a member of the All Nigeria People's Party and was his party 's candidate in the 2011 presidential election .

Life

Studies and teaching

Shekarau studied mathematics as a teacher at Ahmadu Bello University . He then started teaching at the Government Technical College Wudil in 1978 . In 1980 he became the director of Government Day Junior Secondary School in Wudil. In the same year he then moved to the Government Secondary School in Hadejia , in 1986 to the Government College Birnin Kudu , then to the Government Secondary School in Gwammaja and finally in March 1988 to Rumfa College .

Shekarau became deputy director of education in 1992. In 1993 he became director of planning, research and statistics in the Ministry of Education. In 1994 he became State Secretary in the Ministry of Education.

In January 1995 he worked as State Secretary in the Ministry of Water Resources. From there he went back to the Ministry of Education in May 1997. From February to May 2000 he held various positions, most recently as chief editor at the State College of Arts, Science and Remedial Studies (CASRS). He stayed there for 17 months until he resigned in October 2001. Then he went into the private sector.

In the 2003 elections he was elected governor Kanos and replaced by Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso after the 2007 elections .

Abdulahi Askra , a journalist for the daily Blueprint , claimed that Shekarau supported Boko Haram with ten million naira a month (then about 63,000 US dollars) during his tenure as governor to protect the state from terrorist attacks. Shekarau denied the allegations.

Shekarau was a candidate in the 2011 presidential election .
