I monument: frontal view

An I monument is a sculpture that was first erected in the city of Frankfurt am Main . The work of the artist Hans Traxler in collaboration with the stonemason Reiner Uhl has been in the Oberrad district since March 24, 2005 , on the banks of the Main between Rudererdorf and Gerbermühle in Frankfurt's green belt .

Since July 29, 2007, a second copy has been in Kassel at Brüder-Grimm-Platz , set up on the occasion of the Caricatura V, which is taking place parallel to documenta 12 . The third copy was erected in Bielefeld on September 27, 2019 . It is located in the center of the city in the Park of Human Rights . All three I-Monuments were created according to the design by Hans Traxler and belong to the genre of comic art ; the Frankfurt copy is part of the series Komische Kunst in the Frankfurt Green Belt .

A monument to the self consists of a stone base, as is usually found in monuments of famous people of contemporary history, but on which there is no statue . On the front is "I" in golden capital letters, on the back a three-step staircase allows climbing the plinth.

Plaque at the monument

Under the context of “Every person is unique”, visitors are encouraged to climb the pedestal and, inspired by Traxler's drawings on a display board, to have themselves photographed in various positions . The visitor photographed in this way becomes a monument himself.

The board reads:

Every human is unique.
Of course, this also applies to all animals.
Hold it tight forever. Here.
