Ichthyophis is a genus of amphibians from the order of the sneak amphibian (Gymnophiona).

description

There are scales on the skin. The eyes are under the skin. There are two rows of teeth in the lower jaw. Os squamosum and os parietale meet. The tentacles are cone-shaped and lie between the eye and the nostril.

Occurrence

The genus occurs from South Asia to the western part of the Indo-Australian archipelago as well as in the Philippines.

Systematics

The genus Ichthyophis was first described by Leopold Fitzinger in 1826 . It comprises 50 species (as of November 18, 2018):

The species Ichthyophis husaini , of which only a single specimen could be found in Meghalaya ( India ) in 1983 , was assigned to the species Ichthyophis garoensis in February 2016 .
