Icosteus aenigmaticus is a representative of the perch relatives (Percomorphaceae) that grows over two meters in length. He is systematically isolated and belongs to his own family .

The animals occur in the North Pacific from Japan via Alaska to southern California at depths of 0 to 1420 meters and eat fish , cephalopods and jellyfish . The fish live close to the ground, the juvenile fish in flatter regions.

Icosteus aenigmaticus has a narrow body of chocolate brown color. The fins do not have hard rays. Adult animals lack ventral fins , they have no scales or scales that have grown into the skin.
