The Ictonychinae ( synonym : Galictinae) are a subfamily of the martens (Mustelidae) that occurs in Africa, Central and South America, the Middle East, Central Asia and the Balkans.

The animals have an elongated body with short legs. The head-trunk length is between 20 and 58 centimeters, the tail length between 11 and 19.3 centimeters and the weight between 200 grams and 3.3 kg.

Systematics

The subfamily was called Galictinae until 2014. Both the Galictinae and the Ictonychinae were introduced in 1921 by the British zoologist Reginald Innes Pocock in the same publication and even on the same page, but the Ictonychinae above. According to the priority rule of the International Commission for Zoological Nomenclature , the name Ictonychinae has priority over the name Galictinae.
