Ida Koehne

Ida Köhne (born June 5, 1907 in Essen , † February 16, 2005 in Oberhausen ) was a German art teacher and painter . In addition to her school pedagogical work, she created an extensive body of work with several hundred paintings , almost 300 drawings , plus prints , numerous sketches and works in glass painting and works in other designs.

Education and professional work

Ida Köhne began her studies at the University of Cologne with German and art history. At the same time she studied at the Cologne Werkschulen and then at the Art Academy in Breslau. Then in Berlin at the State University for Fine Arts with Erich Wolfsfeld and at the State University for Art Education with Georg Tappert and Alexander Kanoldt . In 1936 she completed her studies with the state examination. Until 1971 she worked in Oberhausen as an art teacher at the Elsa-Brändström-Gymnasium and at the Novalis-Gymnasium in Oberhausen. Despite her work as an art teacher, she has never given up her free artistic work. Ida Köhne was a member of the Oberhausen Artists Working Group .

Her artistic estate is in the Freiburg University Library .

The work

In her early work, which was partly lost due to the war, Ida Köhne developed the classic techniques of oil painting. She found her own style after World War II. Travels to France , Spain and Italy and the examination of modernism in the first half of the 20th century had a formative effect on her work, in which, in addition to landscape pictures, many portraits and pictures of groups of people stand out. Fundamental is an open power of observation, an undisguised approach to new experiences, the art of sketchy recording of what has been seen and the implementation in color compositions that use abstract forms of design, but generally do not abandon the reference to the object. A late trip to Israel in the 1970s added new moments to the work.
