Iepe BT Rubingh (born August 17, 1974 in Rotterdam ; † May 8, 2020 in Berlin ) was a Dutch action artist and inventor of the martial art of chess boxing .

Life

Iepe Rubingh was born on August 17, 1974 in Rotterdam. In addition to art, he was also interested in chess and boxing . In 2003 he combined his hobbies with chess boxing and competed in the first world championship match himself in 2003. He was inspired by the comic book Froid Equateur by Enki Bilal . Rubingh was also active as an artist. In 2005 he came into contact with the new lecture format Pecha Kucha by Klein-Dytham Architects in Japan. In the following years he was the first to organize Pecha-Kucha evenings outside of Japan together with his partners Luka Hinse and Joachim Stein. The format has now spread worldwide and is being carried out in 1142 cities.

Rubingh was found dead in his apartment on May 8, 2020.

Action art

As “The Joker”, Rubingh “cordoned off” large traffic junctions in Berlin and Tokyo years ago with a jumble of construction tape and fooled passers-by and authorities. In 2011 he had 500 liters of environmentally friendly water-based paint distributed from 2000 cars on Rosenthaler Platz in Berlin. Rubingh was imprisoned for ten days for his action in Tokyo. "The Joker" was also his fighting name in chess boxing. Other art projects were The Miracle Tree Series in Singapore and Berlin and Oil Drilling in Mauerpark .
