Ignacio Chapela (* 1959 ) is a Mexican - American microbiologist , ecologist, and mycologist at the University of California, Berkeley . There he holds the position of associate professor for microbial ecology.

He is best known for a controversial article published in Nature in 2001 on the transition from maize transgenes to wild maize populations. As a result, Chapela showed himself to be an outspoken critic of the cooperation between the University of California and the biotechnology industry.

In a later dispute with the university, which had initially rejected his continued employment, Chapela accused her of political motives.

Chapela is also known for his work on natural resources and indigenous rights .

Chapela is a Senior Researcher at GenØk , the National Center for Biosafety in Norway.
