Ignacio Vidal y Cros

Ignacio Vidal y Cros ( 1815 - December 29, 1859 ) was a Spanish physician and naturalist .

Live and act

Ignacio Vidal y Cros studied medicine at the Universities of Valencia and Madrid and natural sciences in Paris. Subsequently, he was professor of medicine and physiology at the University of Valencia and in 1846 was appointed director of the Mineralogical and Zoological Museum of the University of Valencia. On January 1, 1850, he was elected national corresponding member ( Académico corresponsal nacional ) of the Royal Academy of Sciences ( Real Academia de ciencias ).

Ignacio Vidal achieved greater fame in his time through his ornithological writings published in 1851 and 1856. Alfred Brehm , who called Vidal “the only ornithological writer in Spain”, named an Orpheus warbler ( Curruca vidali Brehm , 1857, now synonymous ) and a subspecies of the little owl ( Athene noctua vidalii Brehm , 1857) after him. In addition, he was made an honorary member of the German Ornithological Society on April 12, 1856 and an honorary member of the Natural Research Society of the Osterland zu Altenburg on September 2, 1856 . On August 15, 1858, he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina with the academic surname Mercatus ( matriculation number 1890 ).
