Igor Schvede

Igor Schvede (born December 5, 1970 in Prague ) is an Estonian naval officer. Since August 2016 he has been the representative of the Estonian armed forces to NATO and the EU .

Military career

Promotions

In 1986, Igor Shvede joined the Soviet Navy . After his officer training in Saint Petersburg , he moved in 1993 to the Estonian naval forces, which were being reconstructed . From 1994 he was there as the commander of the auxiliary ship Ahti and in 1997 changed to the then flagship Sulev in the same position . In the same year he was promoted to captainleutnant ( Estonian : vanemleitnant ). Increasingly he specialized in mine control, in 1998 he became the commander of the Estonian minesweeping department and acted as chief of staff of the Baltic Naval Squadron , the joint minesweeping association of the Baltic states.

After his promotion to Korvettenkapitän (Estonian: kaptenmajor ) in 2000, he was commander of the Baltic Naval Squadron from 2001 to 2002 . In 2003 he attended a postgraduate degree for senior officers at the Baltic Defense Academy and was promoted to frigate captain (Estonian: kaptenleitnant ) in 2004 . In addition, in the next few years he went through various assignments abroad (including at the ISAF headquarters in Kabul ) in order to qualify for higher tasks. On November 21, 2007 he took over the post of commander of the Estonian Navy, which until then had only been temporarily occupied for a long time (he had already taken on this position earlier). A year later he was promoted to sea captain (Estonian: mereväekapten ). On July 23, 2012, he moved from the Navy to the headquarters of the armed forces and was appointed Chief of Staff there less than a year later. Sten Sepper was his successor in the naval forces.

While serving as chief of staff, Schvede was promoted to flotilla admiral (Estonian: kommodoor ) in February 2015 . In August 2016 he was transferred to Brussels, where he replaced Valeri Saar as Estonia’s military representative to NATO and the EU. As part of the annual promotions for the anniversary of the founding of the Estonian Republic, he was promoted to Rear Admiral in February 2020 .

Private

Igor Schvede is married and has two children (a daughter and a son). In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks English and Russian .
