Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, designed by Oscar Niemeyer

The Church of Saint Francis of Assisi ( Igreja de São Francisco de Assis , also Capela Curial de São Francisco De Assis ) is located in the Pampulha district of Belo Horizonte in the state of Minas Gerais ( Brazil ) and was built according to the design of the architect Oscar Niemeyer .

The church "Igreja de São Francisco de Assis", completed in 1943, houses the expressive panels of the painter Candido Portinari inside and is clad on the outside with tiles painted by the same artist. The gardens in front of the building were laid out by garden architect Roberto Burle Marx . As a result of a conflicting discussion between artists and clergy, the church was not consecrated until April 30, 1959.

It has been part of the Unesco World Heritage in Brazil Ensemble of Modernism in Pampulha since 2016 .

The church is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Belo Horizonte .
