Ikebukuro West Gate Park ( Japanese 池袋 ウ エ ス ト ゲ ー ト パ ー ク , Ikebukuro Wesutu Gēto Pāku ) is a light novel series by the Japanese author Ira Ishida , which appeared in Japan from 2001 and was adapted as a manga and television series. The work is about the 20-year-old Makoto Majima and his exciting and often dangerous life in Tokyo.

20-year-old Makoto Majima spends his time picking up girls and meeting friends. In doing so, he often comes across people who are looking for help and whom he cannot refuse. His mother raised him alone and owns a fruit shop where Makoto often has to help out. Makoto is friends with Takashi Ando, ​​the leader of a gang, and Shun Mizuno and Masa Mori, who are also in the gang.

In West Gate Park he meets Rika Nakamura, a typical ganguro , who becomes his girlfriend. But Rika's best friend Hikaru Shibusawa also takes a liking to Makoto. After Rika offered herself to another man for money, as she had done several times before, she was found strangled in a motel. Makoto wants revenge for this act and uses his connections to Takashi Ando and his gang.

Television series

In 2000 TBS produced an 11-part television series on the light novel, directed by Fuminori Kaneko, Hideki Isano and Yukihiko Tsutsumi. The music was composed by Takefumi Haketa, producer was Aki Isoyama. The song Bōkyaku no Sora ( 忘却 の 空 ) by Sads was used for the opening credits .

The series aired from March 14, 2000 to June 23, 2000 by TBS in Japan.

From March 28, 2006, TBS broadcast a continuation of the series under the title Ikebukuro West Gate Park: Soup no Kai ( 池袋 ウ エ ス ト ゲ ー ト パ ー ク ス ー プ の 回 , Ikebukuro Wesuto Gēto Pāku: Sūpo no Kai ). Directed by Yukihiko Tsutsumi, the actors were the same.

Manga

The adaptation as a manga was drawn by Sena Aritō . Akita Shoten initially published four volumes from July 2001 to 2004 ; the chapters were previously published in Young Champion magazine. The manga was published in English by Digital Manga Publishing and in French by Asuka Comics, a German version was published by Carlsen Comics . The German translation is by Alexandra Klepper.

In July 2006 another manga followed, drawn by Masashi Asaki, under the title IWGP - Denshi no Hoshi . The chapters first appeared in the Weekly Shōnen Magazine published by Kodansha and then in an anthology.
