Il Rovescio della Medaglia is an Italian progressive rock band that was formed in Rome in late 1970 .

Band history

Enzo Vita, Stefano Urso and Gino Campoli were initially active in a beat band and eventually founded Il Rovescio della Medaglia. The first singers were Gianni Mereu and then Sandro Falbo, but Pino Ballarini soon joined the band. The debut album La Bibbia was released in 1971, the successor Io come io in 1972; both were still deeply rooted in hard rock .

It was only with the entry of keyboardist Franco Di Sabbatino and the collaboration with Luis Bacalov that Il Rovescio della Medaglia became a symphonic progressive rock band. The third album Contaminazione is based in part on Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and was later published as Contamination in an English version.

After equipment was stolen in late 1973, the band's success waned. Ballarini got out, Michele Zarrillo replaced him briefly, but mostly the band played without a singer. Further line-up changes followed. In 1975 another single was released, on which a new album was announced, but which was not completed before Il Rovescio della Medaglia disbanded in 1977.

In 1988 the band, which had actually dissolved, put on a live album with recordings from the 1970s. In 1993, Enzo Vita reformed the band with a greatly changed line-up and recorded an AOR album, which was not released until 1999. In the meantime Il ritorno had appeared. Microstorie was recorded in 2011 with Enzo Vita as the only constant and several guest musicians . In April 2013 the band, like Formula 3 , Maxophone , Area , Museo Rosenbach and Mauro Pagani (formerly Premiata Forneria Marconi ), performed at the Italian Progressive Rock Festival in Tokyo. This resulted in a live recording of Contaminazione . A new studio album followed in 2016.
