Ilan Elgar

Ilan Elgar (* 1947 in Israel ) is an Israeli diplomat and was ambassador to Switzerland from 2006 to early December 2011 .

Elgar studied sociology and anthropology at Tel Aviv University . From 1977 he started working for the Israeli Foreign Ministry . Among other things, he was First Secretary at the Israeli embassy in Lilongwe , the capital of Malawi, from 1979 to 1982 . Thereafter, Elgar was Deputy Spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem from 1982 to 1985, and from 1985 to 1988 he was Consul for Public Relations at the Israeli Consulate General in Los Angeles . After his work as First Secretary at the Israeli Embassy in Oslo (1988–1990), posts in the Israeli Foreign Ministry followed as Deputy Director of the Department for International Organizations (1990–1995), as Deputy Director of the Department for Public Relations (1997–1998) and as Director of Translation and Editing Department (1998–2001) and Director of International Organizations Department (2001–2006).

From 2006 to the beginning of December 2011 Elgar was the Israeli ambassador to Switzerland. As such, he was also accredited in Liechtenstein .

Elgar is married and has three children.
