The Ilhéu da Cevada ( German "Barley Island" ), also known as Ilhéu de Agostinho and Ilhéu do Desembarcadouro , is an uninhabited island off the eastern tip of the Portuguese island of Madeira . It belongs to the Caniçal municipality in Machico County .
geography
The Ilhéu da Cevada rises directly southeast of the Pico do Furado on the eastern headland of Madeira. It is surrounded by many smaller rocks. To the southeast of it is the Ilhéu do Farol , on which there is a lighthouse. A few kilometers further south-southeast are the Ilhas Desertas .
Geology, flora and fauna
Like most of the headland, the Ilhéu da Cevada and the Ilhéu do Farol belong to the nature reserve of the Ponta de São Lourenço . They are of volcanic origin and consist of dark trachyte and reddish tuff . Although the gap between the eastern tip of Madeira and the Ilhéu da Cevada is only a few meters wide, the island can not be easily entered by visitors because of the steep cliffs and the strong surf . This makes it a valuable refuge for birds like the Canary Pipit and the Madeira Shearwater . The island's vegetation consists mainly of grasses and some bushes. There are no buildings on the island.
