The Ilhéu do Farol ( German "lighthouse island" ), also known as Ilhéu de Fora and Ilhéu de São Lourenço , is an uninhabited island off the eastern tip of the Portuguese island of Madeira . It belongs to the Caniçal municipality in Machico County .
geography
The Ilhéu do Farol is located around 150 m southeast of the Ilhéu da Cevada . In the north-west, the eastern headland of Madeira borders the two small islands. A few kilometers further south-southeast are the Ilhas Desertas .
Geology and lighthouse
Like most of the headland, the Ilhéu do Farol and the Ilhéu da Cevada belong to the nature reserve of the Ponta de São Lourenço . They are of volcanic origin and consist of dark trachyte and reddish tuff .
At the highest point of the Ilhéu do Farol, the construction of a lighthouse began in 1867 and went into operation in 1870. This lighthouse, known as Farol da Ponta de São Lourenço , is the oldest in Madeira. Its beacon was automated in 1983.
From the lighthouse, a path leads down to a boat dock called Portinho de Santa Maria . It is the only access to the Ilhéu do Farol.
