The Ilha Fiscal is a small island in the Guanabara Bay . It is part of the historical part of the city of Rio de Janeiro .
The current name of the island, originally referred to by the Europeans as the mouse island, is derived from its use as a tax / customs station since the 19th century. Today the island, located directly next to the Rio de Janeiro Naval Arsenal, houses a naval museum.
The island also gained fame through the last great celebration of the Brazilian Empire before the deposition of Emperor Peter II of Brazil and the proclamation of the first Brazilian republic. The celebration in November 1889 was known as Baile da Ilha Fiscal (German roughly: Dance on the Ilha Fiscal).
