Ilkka Koski

Ilkka Rikhard Koski (born June 10, 1928 in Jyväskylä , † February 28, 1993 in Helsinki ) was a Finnish heavyweight boxer and bronze medalist at the 1952 Olympic Games.

Boxing career

Koski won the Finnish heavyweight championships seven times from 1951 to 1956 and 1958. At the 15th Summer Olympics in the Finnish capital Helsinki , he defeated László Bene from Hungary in the second round by knockout in the second round and in the quarterfinals Eddie Hearn from Great Britain 3-0 on points. In the semifinals he then only just lost 1: 2 judges' votes against Sweden's Ingemar Johansson and won bronze.

In 1956 he also took part in the 16th Summer Olympics in Melbourne , where he was eliminated in the round of 16 against the Italian Giacomo Bozzano .

From 1958 to 1962 he played nine professional fights in Finland, Germany and Sweden, including seven wins and one draw. He suffered his only defeat in Berlin in 1960 when he was knocked out in the second round against Ulli Nitzschke .

In 2008 he was inducted into the Finnish Boxing Hall of Fame .
