Illy (born September 5, 1985 ; real name Al Murray ) is an Australian rapper from Melbourne .

Career

Illy grew up in a middle-class family in Melbourne, his father is a university lecturer, his mother a speech therapist. At the age of 13 he wrote his own songs and at 17 he made his first appearance. In addition to his rap career, he also pursued a college degree and graduated from Monash University with a law degree .

Before Illy released his debut album in 2009, he was a member of the rap crew Crooked Eye . With Long Story Short , however, he was not yet able to make a big impression and only achieved a middle position in the urban charts. The breakthrough came a year later with the song It Can Wait and the LP The Chase . It received a lot of praise from the critics and jumped to number 25 on the Australian charts. The song achieved gold status. The next album Bring It Back , which was released after a one-year break, was able to further increase the success. It was named the best urban album of the year at the ARIA Awards . With Heard It All he was also able to get a song into the Australian Top 50 for the first time.

Before his fourth album was released in 2013, Illy founded her own label called Onetwo with the aim of signing and promoting other young rappers and passing on their own experiences in the music business. The label's first release was the LP Cinematic at the end of the year , with which the Melbourne rapper entered the top 5 of the charts for the first time.
