Illyrian climate

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Illyrian climate prevails in Slovenia and in the south-east of Austria . It is the transitional climate between Mediterranean , Alpine and Pannonian climates .

It differs from the Pannonian climate in that it has a much higher amount of precipitation due to the penetration of Mediterranean lows, which rain down on the southern roof of the Alps (also with a high frequency of thunderstorms). Protected by the alpine barrier, the region has a very high number of hours of sunshine and summer averages of over 20 ° C. This is also expressed in the vegetation, which at medium altitudes (400 - 700 m) is characterized by naturally occurring chestnut and downy oak forests and sub-Mediterranean elements such as the wig bush (Cotinus coccygria) and the manna ash (Fraxinus ornus). In winter, the plains are cool and susceptible to fog, similar to the lowlands of Northern Italy, but the middle locations (so-called Riedellagen) are often quite sunny and mild. Characteristic in parts of Slovenia is the bora , a cold balancing wind between the Pannonian lowlands and the upper Adriatic through the gap between the Alps and the Dinarides .
