Upper Adriatic is the name given to the area at the northern end of the Adriatic , the sea area itself as well as the surrounding land region.
On concept and definition
The Adriatic forms an elongated, fjord- like bay (or a tributary sea ) that stretches from the central Mediterranean to the northwest, separating the Apennine peninsula of Europe from the Balkan peninsula . The designation "above" for the end of the inlet stems from the geography of Italy, where one also speaks of northern Italy for northern Italy.

The boundaries of the area are the Southern Alps in the north and the Dinarides in the east. There is no border in the west, one could unspecifically go south from Monti Volsini and Monti Euganei , which protrude characteristically from the Alpine region. Two variants are available for the southern delimitation, on the one hand from the point where the Apennines meets the Adriatic, at Rimini or the Capo di Ancona eastwards towards Zadar , if one assumes a "Middle Adriatic", or much broader on Gargano near Manfredonia (eastern point Capo Vieste ) via the Palagruža Islands to the islands off Dubrovnik . The coastal sections of Italy, Trieste – Po estuary , Po –Rimini and Rimini – Gargano, have no explicit names.
Geographical
The central location of the upper Adriatic is Venice , as well as Trieste as a trading port, other important cities are Ancona , Rimini , Ravenna , Koper (as Slovenia's access to the Adriatic), Rijeka and - in other words - Pescara and Split , as well as Faenza , Ferrara , Padua and Vicenza in Italy Backland.

climate
Climatically, the region is a transition area between the Mediterranean climate , the Alpine climate and the Illyrian climate , characteristic are the Mediterranean lows , especially the Vb subtypes, which move from the Gulf of Genoa exactly over this region (Adriatic low) , and in all seasons, but mainly spring and autumn , occur, and carry heavy rain in the north, and the bora , a compensatory wind from the Pannonian region into the Mediterranean, which causes continental cold incursions, especially in winter, and can penetrate as far as Venice. The combination of general dryness and subtopic oceanic rainfall forms the characteristic torrentes , the periodic dry valleys also of the large rivers ( Piave , Tagliamento ).
