Ilona B. Benda
Ilona Mari Benda , called Ilona Benda-Baranyai (born March 4, 1884 in Berlin , † after 1926); Pseudonym Ilona B. Benda , was a German-American journalist and author. She was a descendant of the Benda family of musicians and the Limbach family of actors .
Life
Ilona Benda-Baranyai's German mother was the language and music teacher (Josephina Maria) Louisa Benda (* 1854 in Düsseldorf), daughter of the opera singer Adolph Benda (* 1825) and the actress and singer Susanna Limbach (* 1827 in Rudolstadt; † 1912 in Houston / Texas).
With the support of her fiancé, the German-American professor of German studies at Harvard University , Karl Detlev Jessen (* 1872 in Winnemark / Schleswig-Holstein, † 1919 in Philadelphia ), Ilona Benda-Baranyai emigrated from her mother and grandmother in 1900 Long-term residence in Berlin via Hamburg to the USA. However, the marriage entered into in 1901 soon failed: Jessen went to the Bryn Mawr Collage, Philadelphia, Ilona Benda-Jessen lived with her mother and grandmother in Malden near Boston, where she joined the socialists . According to the Federal Archives, she corresponded with Natalie Liebknecht.
In 1908 she moved to Houston / Texas , where she first called herself Miss Ilona Benda , then used different first name variations, possibly to disguise her origin because of the increasing anti-German hostility. She worked mostly for the Houston Chronicle , partly for the Galveston Daily News .
In 1919 Miss Ilona B. Benda published the patriotic memorial Our Community War Service Memorial, Houston and Harris County , in honor of the fallen soldiers of the First World War , in which she made her own conjuring contributions. She got involved in charities, was one of the initiators of the conversion of the former (soldier) Camp Logan into a memorial area in 1923, which is still a popular leisure and event park today. In 1924 she was a passionate co-founder of the Harris County Humane Society (later The Houston SPCA ).
Ilona B. Benda married Walter Frederick Kohenau in 1926 under her author's name . For the following years there were no entries in the Houston address books for either family name.
