Limbach came from a long-established Braunschweig master shoemaker family, residing in Wendenstrasse , most recently no. 1601. His mother was a daughter of the court turner Zacharias Conrad Tägemeyer, residing on Bohlweg , most recently no. 2077. This and subsequently the son Johann Heinrich Tägtmeyer were also teachers at what was then the Collegium Carolinum on Bohlweg. In the neighborhood was the opera house on Hagenmarkt , whose directors, Sophie Walther ( An der Catharinenkirche No. 1982) and Ernst August Friedrich Klingemann (Bohlweg No. 2071), lived within sight. Limbach himself later also turned to acting and is described as a valued ensemble member who distinguished himself through education and reliability.

A (Herr) Limbach can be found in relevant theater almanacs : 1825 for Merseburg (there Walther Society), 1826 Halle (there Gerlach Society), late summer 1827 Rudolstadt (troupe from von Schwartz). Heinrich Eduard Bethmann had taken over the company in 1828 , initially for the Leipzig City Theater , when Karl Theodor von Küstner had resigned there. With this Bethmann “Herzoglich-Anhalt-Dessauische” society, Limbach traveled through Central Germany (e.g. to the new Herzogliche Hoftheater Meiningen in 1831 ) together with his wife, the actress and singer Auguste Mathilde Hildebrandt (1801–1885), divorced Hartmann, daughter of the Dresden theater prop master Franz Matthias Anton Hildebrandt, - as “M. Limbach ”should not be confused with Madelaine / Magdalena Limbach (* 1810) and Margaretha Limbach (* 1817), the latter married to actor Freymüller.

In 1834, Karl Immermann brought the couple to the Stadttheater Düsseldorf , where Immermann was involved in reforming and optimizing role studies using his own method (“Immermann's model stage”). In 1837 the Limbachs went to the Detmold Court Theater , where three of their children were soon on stage, interrupted by an engagement in Oldenburg at the Grand Ducal Court Theater . After all, they worked at the Hoftheater Darmstadt from 1850 to around 1863 - with guest engagements in Oldenburg, Hamburg , London (1852 and 1853 summer engagements at St James's Theater under Emil Devrient ) and 1856 Berlin (Friedrich Wilhelmstädtisches Theater, later Deutsches Theater Berlin ).

The couple spent their twilight years in Berlin with their daughter, the soprano Luise Limbach (1834–1909), married von Carnap. In addition, Friedrich Heinrich and Mathilde Limbach had the following children:

  • Marie Susanna (* 1827 in Rudolstadt, † 1912 in Houston / Texas), singer and actress, married to the opera singer Friedrich Gottlieb Adolph Benda .
  • Marie Therese (* 1837 in Detmold, † around 1906 in Munich), married Kraitmayr, actress and singer in Kassel at the Electoral Opera House ( Staatstheater Kassel ).
  • Anton Paul (* 1840 in Detmold, † 1899 in Chicago), singer (bass), emigrated in 1881 as a lithographer.
  • Ludwig Theodor (* 1844 in Detmold).

  2. ↑ It was not common to use the first name at that time, not even on large houses! (with the exception of theater directors, likelihood of confusion and child roles). Another Mr. Limbach has not yet been identified, Limbach often performed together with Mad. Limbach (also the Limbach couple ). Friedrich Heinrich Limbach's documented family events took place at the proven theater seats, and the Limbach children involved were performed by their familiar first names
  3. In his marriage certificate from April 1832, FH calls himself a “member of the Bethmannsche Actor Society in Nordhausen ”, the Nordhausen city archive confirmed the stay of a “Herzoglich-Anhalt-Dessauische Gesellschaft” for April a. May 1832.
