The Ilyophinae are a subfamily of the pit eels (Synaphobranchidae). They live in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans , mostly at greater depths.

features

The types of the Ilyophinae reach body lengths of 20 to 80 cm. They feed on bottom-dwelling invertebrates and show a special adaptation to the cracking of hard-shelled invertebrates. In addition, her skull is reinforced by a thick central keel formed by the premaxillary , ethmoid , parasphenoid and sphenoid bone. There are strong tooth plates in the upper jaw and on the palate. As a result of the development of the keel of the skull, the orbit , the bony eye socket, is reduced in size and the eyes are very small, while the olfactory organs are long and enlarged.
