Ilze Jaunalksne

Ilze Jaunalksne-Rēdere (born November 19, 1976 in Jūrmala , Latvian SSR , Soviet Union ) is a Latvian journalist and television presenter . For her commitment to freedom of the press and against political corruption in her home country, she received the first International Women of Courage Award (IWOC) from the United States Department of State in 2007 .

Commitment and honor

Jaunalksne is a journalist. As a TV presenter for the current magazine De Facto , she uncovered a scandal about buying votes in March 2006 . Prominent politicians from several parties were involved in this. Her report led to indictments against several political leaders and the resignation of a minister.

As a result, there were attempts to threaten and discredit Jaunalksne . She therefore sued the Latvian government for defamation . Her case was the first of its kind in Latvia. The court ruled in Jaunalksne's favor and the state was ordered to pay her damages . The jury of the Women of Courage Awards saw this as an important contribution to the democratization of the country after the political change.

In March 2007 Ilze Jaunalksne received the first ever “ International Women of Courage Award ”. Women from Afghanistan , Saudi Arabia and Zimbabwe were among the ten winners of the year . They were awarded the prize on March 7, 2007 by Condoleezza Rice . Jaunalksne was unable to attend the ceremony because of her pregnancy .

In 2003 Jaunalksne moderated the Latvian preliminary decision Eirodziesma for the Eurovision Song Contest . - She married TV journalist Gundars Rēders in 2019 .

Filmography

Jaunalksne played a journalist in the Latvian short film Rit Bus ( English version : Will Have It Tomorrow ) in 2008 .
