The Imabari 1700 container ship type has been built in over 30 units by the Japanese shipbuilding group Imabari Zosen since 2006 .

The model ship of the series, the Cala Puma , was launched in 2006. In the following years the type developed into a successful series in its segment. In July 2010, Maersk Wismar, the thirty-seventh and so far last unit, was delivered. The ship type is still offered.
The Imabari 1700 ships are designed as feeder and short-haul container ships with about four-fifths aft superstructures and a continuous deck. They have five holds in front of the deckhouse which are closed by pontoon hatch covers. On deck, 16 20-foot bays in front of and two 40-foot bays behind the deckhouse can be stowed in four to six layers. Most of the ships were built without their own loading gear ; some units received two hydraulic ship cranes attached to the midships in front of the deckhouse and a third one on the aft edge for cargo handling . The ship type has 1708 TEU storage spaces and can transport around 22,000 tons with maximum unloading. The ships are designed for the transport of dangerous cargo and there are around 200 connections for refrigerated containers.
The ships are powered by a two - stroke MAN B&W 7S60MC diesel engine built by Mitsui in Japan . The engine enables a speed of around 19.5 knots . Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator are available.
