Imperialism (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Imperialism: The high art of world domination is a computer strategy game by the US game development studio Frog City Software from 1997. It was distributed by Mindscape .

description

It transports the player to the time of industrialization from 1815 to 1915. With economic skill he has to lead his nation to a world and industrial power. The player has limited diplomatic possibilities to influence the course. But he can also expand his empire by military means in a turn-based strategy in order to one day be recognized as a "world ruler". The higher the degree of industrialization, the more opportunities the player has. The winner of a game is determined in a so-called governor 's council, which is held every ten game years. Imperialism offers a multiplayer mode in which up to seven human players can compete against each other on the network or over the Internet.

By mining resources that are distributed on the fields of the map in certain regions (coal and iron mountains, petroleum desert / swamp / tundra etc.), the player has the opportunity to develop further developed units after researching the corresponding technology that give it an advantage over competitors.

The game refers to the expansionist aspirations of industrialized nations in the 19th century , and superficially leaves the choice of securing victory peacefully. However, this is much more difficult or even impossible due to the way the computer opponents play. The player can choose which major power he wants to play. Trade can be conducted with other countries, which can improve relationships. If relations with smaller countries are very positive, that country can be made a colony. Other great powers can be offered alliances that can be broken at any time.

The successor Imperialism II: The Conquerors appeared in 1999. In the second part of the series, the world was expanded. Then there was the New World , in which there are correctly designated indigenous peoples. One by one, these fall victim to the European powers. Here, too, the winner is the one who rules the old world .

Trivia

  • The world record for the fastest game win is held by the Twitch user "seboo1337", who played the game in the standard setting (New World, difficulty level "Beginners") in 6:30 minutes in 2013. The Speedrun can also be seen on YouTube .
  • In the meantime, a small but lively modding scene has developed, which has expanded the standard game with numerous custom maps, including a realistic world map.
  • Since 2012, a group of modders has set itself the goal of developing imperialism as an open source project , analogous to FreeCiv , and making it freely available.
  • While the original CD-ROM version from 1997 is not easily playable on newer systems, GOG.com offers a paid download version that is compatible with Windows XP, 7, 8 and 10.
