In Another Land

In Another Land is a song written by Bill Wyman and released as the third track on the Rolling Stones album Their Satanic Majesties Request . The song is the only Rolling Stones piece on which Bill Wyman appears as lead singer and is one of only three pieces he wrote for the Rolling Stones.

The song was recorded while recording Their Satanic Majesties Request . Wyman had turned up for a recording session in vain and used the time to record the song, along with singer and guitarist Steve Marriott and bassist Ronnie Lane from Small Faces .

Bill Wyman said of the making of the song:

“I'd been messing with this song. It was a bit… what I thought was kind of spacy, you know… a bit kind of Satanic Majesties -like. And psychedelic in a way… The idea for the song is about this guy who wakes up from a dream and finds himself in another dream. "

Matthew Greenwald wrote about the piece on Allmusic:

“A whimsical, trippy ode, these days it sounds like a psychedelic Spinal Tap song, with words describing blue trees and flowers…. Interestingly, the bridge section is one of the hardest-rocking efforts by the Rolling Stones from this period. "
