Inchcolm ( Gaelic : Innis Choluim , Isle of St. Columba) is an island in the Firth of Forth in Scotland . Among other things, there is a medieval abbey of the Augustinian Canons on the island . In 2001 there were still two people living on Inchcolm.

geography

Inchcolm is in the Firth of Forth south of Fife , north of Edinburgh , east of the Forth Bridge . The island is about 930 meters from the north coast between Aberdour and Dalgety Bay , and 700 meters from the pier there .

history

World War II fortifications on the east end of Inchcolm

Originally called Emona or Aemonia, Inchcolm was probably used by the Roman fleet during the time of the Romans. In 567 it was visited by the Irish monk Columban of Iona . A simple stone building on the island that still stands today dates from this period. The Inchcolm Hogback is one of the few of its kind in Scotland.

In 1547 the island was occupied by the English. The island is mentioned in Shakespeare's Macbeth , among others .

During the First and Second World Wars , the island was fortified to protect nearby Edinburgh.

abbey

A priory was founded by Alexander I in 1123 and elevated from a priory to an abbey in 1235 . During the Scottish Wars of Independence , it was repeatedly attacked by the English . After the Scottish Reformation , the abbey was dissolved. Due to its island location, however, it was largely spared from destruction and is still in good condition today.

fauna

In the west of the island there is a breeding colony of seagulls and fulmars . There are seals around the island .
