Independent charts
The independent charts are regularly published lists of the best-selling records from independent record companies, the so-called independent labels . These lists are continuously updated and provide retailers with an indication of current demand. The first independent charts were raised in Great Britain on January 19, 1980. In Germany there were initially attempts by individual music magazines, such as Spex Magazin, to collect comparable charts on the basis of the sales figures of a few specialized record stores. Media control has been compiling a list since 2011 .
UK Independent Chart
Between 1980 and 1989 the UK Independent Charts were published in Great Britain . The industry journal Record Business created the charts until 1981 and was then taken over by the Media Research & Information Bureau (MRIB). The charts were sold to other magazines for printing. Since 2009 there has been a new edition of these chart lists.
Independent charts in other countries
United States
Since September 2, 2000, Billboard Magazine has published a weekly list of independent productions, initially under the name Billboard Top Independent Albums and later as Billboard Independent Albums . Since 2002, a list of the 50 best-selling independent albums of the year has been published at the end of the year. The charts are compiled by Nielsen SoundScan and are based on the actual sales figures for physical sound carriers as well as the number of downloaded music files from online music services .
Germany
The German music magazine Sounds published its own alternative charts from August 1980 to June 1981 , which were renamed the Sounds Charts from December 1980 . The survey was based on the sales figures from record stores and mail order companies with a focus on independently produced records. The lists made no claim to objectivity. From June 1988 to the beginning of the 1990s, Spex Magazin also published its own independent charts based on WOM's sales figures . The subsequently published Spex Underground Charts also included publications by major labels such as WEA Records or RCA Records .
Since January 2011 the market research company media control has been publishing independent charts on behalf of the Association of Independent Music Companies eV on a monthly basis. This is a list of the most successful albums based on the monthly sales figures. The publication date is always the beginning of the new month.
Australia
In Australia, the Australian Independent Record Labels Association (AIR) collects weekly and monthly independent charts. Since July 2000, the charts have focused on Australian artists releasing their singles and albums on Australian record labels. On the one hand, AIR distinguishes between the top 20 singles / album charts, which are marketed exclusively through independent distributors. Furthermore, it collects the top 20 singles / album charts in which distribution does not play a role, so it can also be done by a major label. In addition, the top 10 sorted according to specific genres are collected monthly.
