Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) ( Hindi इंडियन नैशनल लोकदल , "Indian National People's Party"), until 1998 Haryana Lok Dal (Rashtriya) (HLD (R)) ("National People's Party of Haryana") is a regional party in the Indian state of Haryana .

Party history

The party was founded under the name Haryana Lok Dal (Rashtriya) in October 1996 by the former Chief Minister of Haryana , Devi Lal . The originally targeted name Haryana Lok Dal was already occupied by another political group.

Devi Lal has been involved in politics in Haryana for many decades. He had already been involved in the independence movement at the time of British India . After independence he was initially active in the Congress Party, left it in the early 1970s and switched to the Janata Party . He was Chief Minister of Haryana several times in the 1970s and 1980s. Lal played a major role in the founding of Janata Dal in 1988. After the all-India parliamentary elections in 1989 , Lal became Deputy Prime Minister in the cabinets of VP Singh and Chandra Shekhar . After that, Lal was briefly active in the Samajwadi Party , then switched to the Samata Party and finally founded his own party in 1996. On April 29, 1998, the party was reconstituted under the name Indian National Lok Dal . Om Prakash Chautala , the son of Devi Lal, who was also Chief Minister of Haryana for a time, took over the leadership of the party .

The party entered into an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party in the Indian parliamentary elections in 1998 , but after the election it supported the government of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and became a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The parliamentary election in Haryana in 2000 was won by the INLD. Shortly before the all-India parliamentary elections in 2004, she terminated the alliance with the BJP. In the Indian parliamentary elections in 2004 and 2009 , the INLD could not win a single constituency and also lost the parliamentary election in Haryana in 2005. Shortly before the 2008 election, it again entered into an alliance with the BJP, but left it again after the 2009 election. Before the Indian election in 2014, INLD declared its support for the BJP top candidate Narendra Modi and won 2 of the 10 constituencies of Haryana in alliance with the BJP. In the Haryana parliament election, the party came off rather disappointingly.

On October 22, 2014, Abhay Chautala, the younger son of Om Prakash Chautala, was elected chairman of the INLD faction in the parliament of Haryana, so that the party is now essentially run by a family in the third generation.

In terms of programming, INLD is primarily aimed at the farmers in Haryana and wants to represent their interests. Political issues are e.g. B. Prices of artificial fertilizers, regulation of irrigation and prevention of flooding in Haryana. The main political opponent is the Congress Party.
