The former Indiana County Courthouse , which now as Old Indiana County Courthouse is called, is located in Indiana and was until 1970, the Justice and Administration Building ( Courthouse ) of the Indiana County in the US -amerikanischen state Pennsylvania .
It was built between 1869 and 1870. The design came from the local architect James W. Drum and chronologically the second building that fulfilled this purpose after the previous building was demolished in 1868. The construction costs amounted to 150,000 US dollars (1870). The inauguration took place on December 19, 1870. On that occasion, former Pennsylvania Governor William F. Johnston made a speech.
The Italian-looking architecture of the building in the style of the Second Empire is based predominantly on red bricks and stone. The roof was designed as a mansard roof . The courthouse has a four-sided clock tower, the dome of which is covered with gold leaf . The main meeting room on the second floor was 30 meters long and 25 meters wide. The ceiling height was around nine meters.
The large clock in the dome was the largest in the county when it was installed. It was built by the Howard Clock Company of Boston and Springfield, Ohio . The dials on the four sides have a diameter of around 210 cm. The watch had to be wound once a week, which took 15 minutes.
Right next door, the sheriff's office and a prison were built in 1879 , which was structurally connected to the courthouse to transfer prisoners and convicts. At least six convicts were hanged in the court yard between 1882 and 1913.
On the cover of the September 24, 1945 issue of LIFE magazine , Indiana-born James Stewart was shown with the courthouse in the background. John F. Kennedy delivered a speech outside the building during the 1960 presidential campaign .
The last meeting took place on November 11, 1970. After the commissioning of the new building, the old courthouse was no longer used and demolition was planned. The county government signed a contract with the National Bank of the Commonwealth on January 3, 1972 to renovate the building so that it could be used for administrative purposes. NBOC had to spend $ 100,000 on renovations for the first three years to be eligible for a $ 12,000 annual lease for the next 47 years.
The courthouse was inscribed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 29, 1974 . In the present (2009) it is used by First Commonwealth Financial as an office building. A model of the building is in the Miniature Railroad & Village of the Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh .
