Indo-European society

The Indo-European Society ( Society for Indo-European Studies, Société des études indo-européennes , IG ) is an association to promote the study of Indo-European languages and Indo-European or historical-comparative linguistics.

History and activity

The Indo-European Society (IG) is an international scientific organization that was founded on September 2, 1953 in Munich. It advocates the promotion of young academics and a good representation of the subject of Indo-European Studies in public and acts in the field of science policy as a representative of interests of the subject beyond national borders. In addition, the IG supports the organization of at least one conference each year.

Currently (2017) the society has around 270 members worldwide from Indo-European Studies, General Linguistics and related subjects.

The Indo-European Society publishes the " Kratylos ", the critical reporting and review organ for Indo-European and general linguistics, in the Ludwig-Reichert-Verlag. It is named after Plato's eponymous dialogue Kratylos , in which linguistic and philosophical phenomena and above all the question of the arbitrariness of linguistic signs ( arbitrariness ) are discussed.
