The: Industriebahn Roßdorf served to develop the basalt quarry in Roßberg near Roßdorf , east of Darmstadt , on the northern edge of the Odenwald , which today belongs to the Odenwälder hard stone industry .

history

1st operating phase: The quarry, which is still active today, received a four-kilometer-long industrial railway with a gauge of 600 mm for the first time in 1888 . It made it possible to transport the mined basalt from the quarry to the Ober-Ramstadt station on the Odenwaldbahn in the south and reload it onto the standard gauge Hessian Ludwigsbahn .

2. Operating phase: When the Darmstadt Ost – Groß-Zimmer railway line, which is much closer to the quarry, was opened in 1897 , a siding with a loading facility was built there. The distance between the quarry and this section of the Prussian-Hessian Railway Community was only 500 meters. As a result, the industrial line was extended to there and the old route including loading facilities in Ober-Ramstadt was abandoned.

3rd phase of operation: In 1906 an aerial cableway was built to replace the Roßberg quarry and the loading facility on the siding to the Darmstadt Ost – Groß -zimmer line. The industrial railway continued to operate within the quarry until 1958, when it was replaced by non-rail vehicles.
