IndustryPack (also: IP module ) is a form factor that specifies a daughter board about the size of a business card. This standard was originally developed by Greenspring Computers in 1988, but the standard is now being maintained by VITA as "ANSI / VITA 4.0-1995 (R2002)".

The dimensions of the module are approx. 46 mm × 99 mm (1.8 ″ × 3.9 ″). With these dimensions, up to four IndustryPack modules fit on a double Euro card (e.g. a VME IP carrier). The standard also specifies double-width modules, which then occupy two adjacent slots. An IndustryPack is plugged into a carrier card as a daughter card and is then parallel to this and the neighboring card. The IP modules are connected to the carrier card via two 50-pin connectors (corresponding to SCSI -2). One of these connectors is assigned to the IP bus, the other is available for I / O signals .

IP bus

An IP module is connected to the host via the IP bus. The IP bus offers 8- or 16-bit access width at a clock frequency of 8 or 32 MHz and three address spaces:

  • I / O space (128 bytes): The registers of the IP module are usually located in this address space.
  • Memory space (up to 8 MB): In this address space, the memory on the IP module can be addressed. If the size of the I / O space is not sufficient for the registers, these can also be placed in this address space. Access to the memory space takes longer than access to the I / O or ID space.
  • ID space (up to 128 bytes): The ID space (also: ID-PROM) contains some information in a fixed format. This includes a coding of the clock frequency and a manufacturer ID. The remaining space can be used for module-specific information.

The bus also supports DMA and interrupts .

application

IP modules are used as daughter cards on carrier cards , for example on VME or CompactPCI cards. Due to their relatively small size, a very high functional density can be achieved on such a carrier card. The modular system enables four different functions to be implemented on one carrier card, for which a large number of individual VME or CompactPCI cards would otherwise have been required. There are large numbers of IP modules from different manufacturers with a wide range of functions.
