The Information Center for Foreign Language Research (IFS) has existed since 1969 as a department-free central facility of the Philipps University of Marburg . It has specialized in the collection and description of literature and research activities in the field of foreign language research and didactics and is unique in the Federal Republic of Germany with this content orientation. It has been managed by Frank G. Königs since 1998 .

tasks

The central task of the IFS is the documentation of publications on foreign language research, in particular on the methodology and didactics of modern foreign language teaching, in a literature database with around 73,000 entries. All important German and numerous international specialist journals as well as monographs , compilations , e-journals , teaching materials, learning software and gray materials from the above-mentioned areas are documented.

Publications

Since 1970 the IFS has been publishing the annotated, quarterly Bibliography of Modern Foreign Language Teaching , in which contributions to the IFS database are indicated with key words and generally described with short presentations. The IFS maintains the database-supported research register for language teaching research and language teaching for German-speaking countries, which is published in issue 1 of a year of the Bibliography of Modern Foreign Language Teaching and on the institute's website. Interested parties can have their own projects in the field of foreign language research included in the research register.

As a cooperation partner, the IFS supplies data on foreign language didactic publications to the Specialized Information System Education ( FIS Education ). FIS Education is a network of around 30 documentation institutions with different content orientations from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The online researchable FIS Education literature database, which has been integrated into the pedagogical specialist portal , is the "core" of the association. With around 560,000 references on all pedagogical and educational topics, this is the most comprehensive information service on educational literature in German-speaking countries.

Furthermore, the IFS has a reference collection of magazines, monographs and textbook collections.

Location

The information center for foreign language research is located in the multi-purpose building of the Philipps University of Marburg on the Lahnberge in Hans-Meerwein-Straße.
